CD Manufacturing FAQs

What input formats do you accept for CDs?

We can work with just about any format you supply. However, our preferred format for masters is CD or CD-Recordable in compliance with Philips Red Book specifications. We also accept PCM 1610, 1630 and Exabyte Tapes. Evatone can provide complete premastering services with the ability to work from numerous storage media including DAT, CD, analog ¼" reel-to-reel tape, cassette, or even vinyl.

What is an acceptable length for an audio CD?

Nominal CD Audio program length according to the Philips Red Book specification is 74 minutes. Longer programs up to 79:40 minutes can be produced but may not operate properly in all playback devices. Program lengths in excess of 79:40 minutes are strongly discouraged. A CD Audio disc may include up to 99 tracks with up to 99 index points per track.

What formats do you accept for CD-ROMs?

Our preferred format for master is CD or CD-Recordable in compliance with Philips Yellow Book specifications. Evatone can provide complete premastering services with the ability to work from numerous storage media including Floppy, CD, Zip, Jaz, SyQuest, Colorado and many other removable formats. You can also upload files to our File Upload Center.

What is the capacity of a CD-ROM?

79:14 (685 MB) is the recommended maximum length. 79:40 (694 MB) is the absolute maximum.

How many colors can be printed on my disc?

Up to 5-color screen printing is available, process or PMS.

How should I supply artwork for my CD printing?

We accept artwork files from many different software programs for MAC and PC. You must provide us with a hard copy proof and copies of all the fonts that you use in your artwork. Please consult the CD/DVD Checklist in our Forms and Info section for detailed instructions.

How closely will the printing on my CD match the printing on my packaging or inserts?

The process of printing on metallized plastic is very different from the process of printing on paper, so a perfect match is rarely possible. Within these limitations, however, Evatone's professionals achieve exceptional color consistency.

What is the difference between replication and duplication?

Duplication is typically used for quick turnaround, small jobs. The data or audio is duplicated on the disc by means of a series of dots and dashes burned into a photosensitive layer by a laser beam. When the disc is played, it translates the dots and dashes back into the original data or music from your master.

For jobs of 500 and above, it's more cost-effective to use replication. Your master disc is used to create a glass master, which is then in turn used to create metal stamper that is placed into a molding press. Plastic is injected into the molds, and an exact copy of your master disc is 'pressed'. The data or audio is perfectly replicated by a series of pits on the shiny playing side of the disc.

What requirements do you have to assure copy protection?

Evatone maintains strict standards for safeguarding digital content. We use world class technologies that are easily integrated into your CD-ROM for a complete solution.

What other measures do you take to protect against piracy?

Along with powerful copy protection, Evatone maintains strict procedures to monitor and screen for unauthorized or pirated copying requests. Evatone will not knowingly replicate or duplicate any optical or magnetic media without the consent of the intellectual property owner or his/her duly authorized licensee. Evatone exchanges information and cooperates fully with RIAA, MPAA and SIIA policies. Evatone also cooperates fully with appropriate law enforcement agencies.

For further security, Evatone provides RepliCheck™, a service that reduces the risk of pirated CD contents. It quickly scans a CD for copyrighted music and software, and then cross-references those contents against a customer's license documentation.
