DVD 5 holds 4.7 gigabytes of information that is roughly equal
to 2 hours of video. The disc is manufactured with two .6mm discs that are sandwiched
together to create a single disc. Playback occurs when the laser beam reads from
the bottom of the disc, therefore the label can be printed on the entire top surface.
DVD 9 holds 8.5 gigabytes of information or the equivalent of about
4 hours of video. DVD 9s are manufactured with two separate layers of content, with
a semi-transparent film of gold between them. When the laser beam has finished reading
the content on the first layer it refocuses through the gold film and reads the
second layer. DVD 9s are also referred to as single sided discs as they are read
from one side only, therefore the label can be printed on the entire top surface.
DVD 10 holds 9.4 gigabytes of information equal to about 4.5 hours
of video. This format is two DVDs bonded together with an opaque metal layer in
between, which means that the disc must be manually turned over for the other side
to be read by the laser. Therefore the label can only be printed on the inner hub
in the area from 44mm outer diameter and 39.5mm inner diameter.
